Look Up: The Secret to Finding God’s Presence in the Everyday

How Lifting Your Eyes Can Bring Awe and Peace to Your Daily Life

Good morning,

This week’s message is personal for me. I’ve been thinking a lot about how easy it is to get stuck looking down, focusing on the daily grind, and missing the bigger picture of what God is doing around us.

Let me share a lesson I learned while fly fishing—a moment that changed how I see not just the river, but life itself.

This Week’s Focus: Cultivating Awe by Lifting Your Eyes

Fly fishing in Idaho taught me more than how to catch fish. It taught me to look up. My eyes were so locked on the water—searching for fish signs, trying not to slip on the rocks—that I missed the beauty of the mountains, the valleys, and the river that surrounded me. My dad had to remind me to stop, pause, and take in the beauty that was right in front of me.

The same thing happens in life. We get so busy trying to manage jobs, finances, relationships, and family that we forget to lift our heads and stand in awe of God’s creation and His work in our lives.

Here’s the thing: cultivating awe isn’t just about noticing beauty around you—it’s about lifting your eyes above the worries and pressures of life. The more we cultivate awe, the more we realize that God is in control and our burdens aren’t as heavy as they seem.

Why It Works:

  1. Awe Shifts Your Perspective: When we lift our heads and look at the greatness of God, it changes how we see our problems. What feels overwhelming starts to shrink when you remember how powerful and present God is.

  2. Awe Invites God’s Presence: When we stop and acknowledge the beauty around us, we’re reminded that God is with us in every moment. It opens our hearts to experience His presence in new ways.

  3. Awe Reduces Anxiety: The more we focus on the weight of life’s challenges, the bigger they seem. But when we lift our eyes to God’s creation and His majesty, we’re reminded that He holds all things in His hands.

  4. Awe Leads to Gratitude: Looking up and recognizing God’s handiwork in the world around you fills your heart with gratitude. It’s hard to stay stressed when you’re in awe of the God who made the heavens and the earth.

  5. Awe Draws You Closer to God: When we cultivate awe, we’re actively choosing to see God’s greatness, and that choice draws us into a deeper relationship with Him.

Action Step: Look Up

This week, take intentional moments to lift your head—literally and spiritually. Step outside, breathe deeply, and look up. Whether it’s the stars, the mountains, or even the sky above your neighborhood, take a few moments to reflect on the greatness of God. Let that awe shift your perspective and remind you that God is bigger than whatever you’re facing.
