Good morning,

As I write this, I’m surviving on very little sleep—thanks to our newest little one, who’s just joined the family! Amidst the sleepless nights and baby cries, I am again reminded of the importance of getting good sleep.

I know many people who struggle to sleep, so let’s talk about how to get some good rest. This prayer practice has been a game-changer for many people who struggle to find peace before sleep.

This Week’s Focus: Finding Rest Through Reflection

Here’s the deal: A lot of us struggle with sleep because our minds are racing with the day’s events. The Examen is a quick, 15-minute prayer practice that helps you unwind and reflect, making it easier to find peace before you hit the hay.

How to Practice the Examen:

  1. Presence - Sit quietly for a few minutes and remind yourself of God’s presence and love for you. Ask Him to help you see your day through His eyes.

  2. Gratitude - The day you just lived is a gift. Identify 2 or 3 things you’re thankful for from today. Thank God for them.

  3. Review - Slowly reflect on your day from start to finish, being guided by the Holy Spirit. Take note of your successes and challenges.

  4. Respond - Talk to God about ALL the parts of your day. Celebrate the joyous moments and repent of the ways you fell short or made mistakes. Receive the grace God gives to you.

  5. Look Forward - End by looking toward tomorrow with hope and asking for strength, wisdom, and grace for the new day.

Why It Helps:

The Examen isn’t just about reflecting on your day; it’s about inviting God into your daily life and finding peace. As you practice this regularly, you’ll likely find that it makes it easier to unwind and sleep more soundly, even when life’s a bit hectic.
